Background of the Study

Healthcare workers play a crucial role in providing medical services, but their jobs are often associated with high stress levels due to long working hours, heavy workloads, and emotional exhaustion. Prolonged exposure to stress can lead to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and burnout (Okeke et al., 2024). The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated job-related stress among healthcare professionals, highlighting the urgent need for mental health interventions.

In Adamawa State, many healthcare workers experience significant work-related stress, yet mental health support systems remain inadequate. The high patient-to-healthcare worker ratio, coupled with resource shortages, contributes to mental health deterioration among medical personnel (Aliyu & Ibrahim, 2023). This study seeks to explore the impact of job stress on the mental health of healthcare workers and propose strategies to mitigate work-related stress in medical settings.

Statement of the Problem

Healthcare workers in Adamawa State face high levels of job stress, leading to adverse mental health outcomes. Many suffer from burnout, anxiety, and depression due to excessive workload, poor working conditions, and lack of institutional support. Despite the growing concern, limited research has been conducted on the mental health of healthcare workers in the state. This study aims to assess the impact of job stress on mental well-being and recommend stress management interventions for healthcare professionals.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the prevalence of mental health issues among healthcare workers in Adamawa State.

  2. To assess the impact of job stress on healthcare workers' psychological well-being.

  3. To recommend strategies for reducing job-related stress among medical professionals.

Research Questions

  1. What are the common mental health issues experienced by healthcare workers in Adamawa State?

  2. How does job stress affect the mental well-being of healthcare professionals?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce work-related stress in medical settings?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Healthcare workers in Adamawa State experience high levels of job stress leading to mental health challenges.

  2. Increased job stress is associated with higher rates of anxiety and burnout among healthcare professionals.

  3. Implementing stress management interventions will improve the mental well-being of healthcare workers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on healthcare workers in Adamawa State, assessing job stress levels and mental health outcomes. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining self-reported mental health data due to stigma and reluctance of medical institutions to disclose internal stress-related issues.
